WORDS takes a wry and poignant look at how visual art can reveal layers of meaning the written word manages to dissemble. Each work uses the simple image of a leaf but wilfully fails to reference it in the text integral to each piece. Instead words and phrases in common usage make up part of the visual work throwing the meaning of both into question. What does 'democracy' mean to us today? What does 'impressionism' invoke? And what does 'bipolar' actually tell us? The meaning of words shifts with time and use for language is, arguably, the greatest historical record we have but like all records it is imperfect and open to interpretation. Perhaps it is time we take a closer look at what we write, the words we select, how we use them and why.
